A Dangerous Political Lie

There is a prevalent misconception in today’s evangelical political circles.  It disarms millions who could otherwise be taking effective action.  It deflects blame from the politically guilty and covers up misdeeds that perpetuate our problems.  It can be summarized in a short statement: “we have to stop the Democrats”.

Inherent in this reasoning is the idea that electing Republicans will bring our nation back on the correct political course.  Sadly, this is the depth of thinking of much of the Evangelical community.  This reasoning ignores the plain, demonstrable fact that overall policy is the same regardless of which party is making decisions.

Democrats make wild spending increases, while Republican do the same.  The difference is that the Democrats make it part of their campaign strategy, while Republicans eagerly spend away our future while citing “political reality”.  The only “political reality” here is that when Republicans have been in control over the past few decades they spent MORE than the Democrats.  If you doubt this, do a Google search for the numbers, and you’ll see for yourself.  And, a little checking will reveal the same pattern on any other issue of substance, including abortion.  The GOP is ALL TALK, and the action goes to the corporate/government cartel that is destroying our nation for profit…profit taken by theft, not free enterprise as they like you to think.  And, by the way, there is no exception here for the “darlings” of the Christian Right.  Bush, Santorum, Huckabee, etc. etc.

Government has expanded to the point of tyranny under BOTH parties.  But the “expanders” who run the GOP are still getting away with the votes of gullible Christians.  And until Christians are willing to say NO!, nothing will change.  “Lesser evil” candidates have gotten us to where we are, and neither the Devil nor the Democrats have enabled them…Christians have.

The Biblical standard for election of civil rulers is seen in Exodus 18:21:  Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens

Of course, all politicians claim these characteristics.  Seeing how they have robbed us to create the monster that we call “government”, and seeing the bumper stickers in our church parking lots every few years, I’d say that Christians haven’t done a good job discerning truth from error.  “At least I’m not a Democrat” isn’t cutting it…don’t you agree?

Comments welcome.

Honestly now, does anyone really think that electing a gaggle of Republicans would solve things? Let's say we could elect 100 Republicans to the Senate, 435 to the house, and even capture the big prize, president.

Can anyone name five things that would fundamentally change? Or even three? We'd still get the poison were getting now, just, perhaps, in slightly smaller doses. I see few, if any, challenges coming from the GOP that are based in principle.

Joel, I agree 100 percent. It's amazing to see that even with the fiscal crisis we face, there is NO Republican plan to even balance the budget! They are STILL playing the old crooked game of cutting the rate of increase and calling it a "cut". Of all the GOP presidential candidates, the only one who actually has a plan for significant cuts is Ron Paul. But sadly, I think the Christian political community is overall too corrupt to support an honest man. They still want bread and circuses.

There are thousands of Christians out there who will support whoever the GOP nominee is. Please, if you are one of them, post here and explain to us WHY you will do that.

Because I escaped from the lunatic asylum, and the definition of what I do is " Doing the same thing over an over and expecting a differant result.

OK, One has a legitimate excuse. Any others?

Your points, Jim, should cause Christians to reconsider what their responbility in voting is all about (and to Whom they are responsible). Another futile aspect of this solely anti-Democrat basis for voting is the need to vote for a winner, regardless of his beliefs or record. I have encouraged support for non-Republican candidates who ably satisfy the Biblical prerequisites, but Christians disdain that as a "wasted vote" because he's not a "winner". Christians call obedience to God a wasted effort, apparently thinking that God's blessing on obedience is null and void today. I always ask these people, "Why should God give us someone wise and honorable if we don't vote for him, and why should we complain if we get what we vote for?"

I think all of this is tied to personal courage, much diminished in our era because public education through the decades has systematically replaced individual aspirations and responsibility with "group think". We would still be overtaxed and enslaved British colonies if our Founders had been educated in our government schools. May God wake us up!

Well said, Barb. Sadly, even many (most?) Christians follow the media lead in viewing elections as sporting events, as though it's just a game where you pick a team and root for them no matter what, or a football pool where you win $100 for picking the winner.
